So I have been man shaving for almost 1 year now. I have tried multiple Safety Razors using only Vintage Gillette’s ranging from the 1900s to the 1970s. My pride and joy is a very beautiful Gold Aristocrat. It’s just the one razor I go to time and time again and always get that great shave. However lately I have been very pleased with the performance of the Merkur 39C Sledge Hammer. I picked this razor up from a trade recently. It usually sells for about $50-60 depending on where you find it.
The sheer weight of this razor and the way the double edge razor blade sits in the head is what I believe accounts for its stunning shaves. Weighing in at a whopping 4oz, this is the heaviest razor I have used to date. Also, the solid finish and texture of the barber pole make it very easy to hold when your hand is wet. While I may have never spent the money to try this razor out I am very satisfied and also happy that this was the first modern razor I have used. If you’re in the market for a nice Safety Razor this is a great one to add to the collection.
